Artificial intelligence image generators have been making waves since the inception of DALL-E. Now, Adobe’s Firefly is the latest contender to step onto the scene, bringing with it major upgrades in features and availability. This release marks the end of a successful six-month beta period. Through Firefly, users can generate a wide range of images, text effects, and vectors using text prompts in over 100 languages. With a staggering 2 billion generations during the beta phase, Adobe is confident in the potential of Firefly.

“Creators amazed us with their engagement and feedback to the Firefly beta, inspiring us to deliver generative AI capabilities that are designed to be commercially safe and seamlessly integrated into the interfaces customers love,” said Ely Greenfield, Adobe CTO. The Firefly model differentiates itself from competitors like DALL-E by training on Adobe Stock Images and public domain content with expired copyrights, ensuring proper permissions and legal usage.

To further incentivize image creators, Adobe Stock contributors will receive royalty payments if their content is used to train the commercial Firefly AI model. This move strengthens partnerships and promotes fairness within the industry. Additionally, all generated images will include content credentials, acting as a “nutrition label” with verifiable details about the asset’s origin, creation date, tools used, and edits made. These measures combat potential controversies surrounding AI-generated images, including misinformation dissemination and improper use of copyrighted works.

To promote user exploration, Adobe introduces the Firefly web application, deemed a “playground for exploring AI-assisted creative expression.” Anyone can visit the web application, log in or create an Adobe account, and experiment with various AI models to experience the features firsthand. The accessibility of this playground enables users to connect with AI in a fun and interactive manner.

But the Firefly experience doesn’t end there. Adobe integrates Firefly-supported features across the Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Express platforms. This integration ensures seamless access to AI-powered functionalities such as Generative Fill and Generative Expand in Photoshop, Generative Recolor in Illustrator, and Text to Image and Text effects in Adobe Express. By incorporating Firefly into their existing software suites, Adobe expands the reach of AI creativity to a wider base of users.

Furthermore, Adobe introduces Generative Credits, a benefit for paid customers of the Firefly web application, Express Premium, and Creative Cloud. These credits allocate tokens for generative AI image workflows. Once users exhaust their plan-specific Generative Credits, they have the choice to continue using the generative AI features at a slower pace or purchase additional subscription packs.

Adobe’s commercial launch of Firefly brings generative AI image generation to the mainstream audience. With its commitment to respecting content creators through proper training data usage, transparency in asset details, and a playful web application, Firefly stands as a powerful tool for bringing imagination to life.
