Apple’s Design Exodus: Another One Bites the Dust

Another Designer Departs During the Ive-Era at Apple

Another designer from the Ive-era departs Apple.

It seems like there’s a bit of an exodus happening over at Apple. According to an explosive report from Bloomberg, yet another industrial designer who worked under the iconic Jony Ive has bid adieu to the tech giant. Peter Russell-Clarke, who spent an impressive 17 years at Apple, has decided to hang up his MacBook and join the fascinating world of space technology at Vast.

It’s no secret that Russell-Clarke played a key role in shaping some of Apple’s most iconic products. Working closely with Ive, he had a hand in crafting everything from the revolutionary iPhone to the sleek iPad, not to mention the Mac, Apple Watch, and the magnificent Apple Park campus. Talk about an impressive resume! But alas, Russell-Clarke felt the call of his own creative endeavors, prompting his departure from Apple earlier this year.

But hold on to your AirPods, because this isn’t just another run-of-the-mill departure. Bloomberg highlights that Russell-Clarke’s exit is part of a larger trend. In fact, nearly all of the designers who once served under the legendary Jony Ive have bid farewell to Apple. It’s like a high-tech version of musical chairs, with Ive himself leaving in 2019 to start his own design firm, LoveFrom. Of course, Apple couldn’t just let him go without a parting gift – they paid him a whopping $100 million to remain their top consultant. However, this lavish arrangement didn’t last long. Apple soon realized that keeping Ive on board meant sacrificing some projects deemed competitive by the tech giant, leading to a disappointing dissolution of their partnership.

With Ive out of the picture, a number of Apple’s talented designers followed in his footsteps and joined LoveFrom. It seemed like a match made in tech heaven. But just when you thought things couldn’t get any more dramatic, in February 2023, Evans Hankey, the replacement for Ive, decided to leave too. Facing this major shake-up, Apple chose to restructure its product design team, waving goodbye to the role of Product Design Chief, which had once been occupied by the illustrious Ive. Instead, they decided to consolidate their forces under the leadership of operations chief Jeff Williams.

So, what does this all mean for Apple’s future? Well, only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: Change is afoot in the halls of the tech giant. Will Apple continue to soar to new heights of innovation, or will the departure of these design maestros leave a void that’s impossible to fill? As tech enthusiasts, we can only watch, wait, and perhaps invest our hard-earned cash in the next big Apple release.

Until then, let’s raise our iMugs and toast to the departing designers – may their creative brilliance shine on in their new ventures, while Apple continues to dazzle us with their indispensable gadgets. Cheers!
