Exploring America’s 50 States Through Generative AI

This is the Perspective of the 50 US States by DALL-E 3 and ChatGPT through AI

I got DALL-E 3 to make portraits of all US states, and oh boy, the outcome was wonderfully bizarre!

While generative AI has been a hot topic for quite some time, it’s important to note that we’ve only begun delving into this exciting technology over the past year or so. As someone deeply invested in the field, I’ve been eager to uncover both the strengths and weaknesses of this technology in its current state, while also looking forward to its future potential.

In this article, I’ll take you on a journey through America’s 50 states using ChatGPT and DALL-E 3, two cutting-edge AI models. This project allowed me to experiment with the AI’s ability to provide accurate and concise descriptions of each state, as well as its capability to generate representative images. It’s not only an opportunity for education and visual enjoyment, but also a chance to evaluate the evolving capabilities and potential applications of AI in creative and educational settings.

The Prompt: Creating Consistent Prompts for All 50 States

To ensure consistency, I needed a single prompt that could be used repeatedly for all 50 states. After some trial and error, I settled on the following prompt, which was used to generate both the images and the facts for each state:

“Draw a 16 x 9 picturesque view of STATE-NAME, showcasing the diverse landscapes and landmarks of the state. Fill the entire frame with the picture, do not leave any border.

Then, explain the three most interesting facts you know about the state in 10 words or less for each point. Format this as a 2 to 4 word headline, followed by 10 words or less of a description. List each point as a bullet, and format the headlines in sentence case, capitalizing only proper nouns and the first word of the headline. Do not capitalize any words that are not proper nouns.”

Using this prompt, I ran iterations for every state, substituting the placeholder “STATE-NAME” with the actual state name. The results varied, as expected with the current quality of generative AI. However, after several attempts, I was able to obtain the following outcomes.

Project Observations: Unintended Delights and Persistent Quirks

I’m sure you couldn’t help but notice that the image for New York depicted two Statues of Liberty and two Empire State Buildings. It seems Lady Liberty decided to travel across the country, and the Empire State Building multiplied! 🗽

Completing this project took slightly longer than anticipated, approximately five days from start to finish. Each state image took anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes to generate, with certain states requiring multiple attempts to achieve the desired parameters. At times, it felt like I was working with a talented yet occasionally obstinate intern.

The AI displayed some challenges, particularly with the 16 x 9 ratio, avoiding borders, occasional abstract interpretations, and even sporadic placement of landmarks. Despite these quirks, the AI managed to capture the overall essence of most states, albeit in a more artistic and interpretive manner rather than a strictly documentary representation. The AI’s uniqueness and creativity make this project an intriguing exploration into the possibilities of AI in visual contexts.

It’s worth noting that starting a new session tended to yield more accurate results, as the AI became increasingly finicky as the session progressed. By starting afresh and simply asking ChatGPT to regenerate, I managed to get closer to the desired outcomes, sometimes succeeding after two or three attempts.

While I didn’t fact-check every detail provided by the AI, I’m confident in the accuracy of the essential facts and geography. However, if you spot any inaccuracies, do let us know in the comments below. Additionally, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this project and its outcome. It was a delightful experience combining AI and art to create this collection of state representations.

Looking Ahead: Future Developments in Generative AI

As generative AI continues to advance and evolve, we can expect even more impressive results and applications. While this project primarily focused on educational and creative endeavors, the potential for AI in various industries is vast.

In the field of education, generative AI has the potential to revolutionize learning by creating interactive and immersive content tailored to individual students. In the creative arts, AI can serve as a powerful tool for artists, assisting in the creation of stunning visual representations, music compositions, and even literature. The possibilities are truly endless.

As we explore the capabilities of generative AI, it’s essential to address ethical considerations, data privacy, and the potential for misuse. Open dialogue and strict adherence to ethical guidelines will ensure that AI continues to bring positive advancements to society.
