Zoom’s Use of AI Raises Privacy Concerns

In recent years, Zoom has become an indispensable tool for remote work and video conferencing. As with many technology companies, Zoom has incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) into its platform to enhance the user experience. While the convenience and speed of AI are widely appreciated, there are legitimate concerns regarding the use of customer data to train AI models.

One of the most controversial AI features that Zoom has been working on is emotion-sensing. This technology would analyze facial expressions during meetings to provide insights into participants’ emotions. However, there are concerns about the accuracy of such analysis and the potential for discriminatory results.

Privacy concerns have also emerged as Zoom updated its terms of service to allow the use of customer data for training its AI models. This sparked backlash from users who were wary of their personal information being utilized without their consent. In response to the criticism, Zoom adjusted the language in its terms of service to provide more transparency on this issue and clarify the consent aspect.

The updated section of the terms of service states, “For AI, we do not use audio, video, or chat content for training our models without customer consent.” This indicates that Zoom will respect users’ privacy and only utilize their data if they explicitly grant consent. Consent is automatically applied when users engage a Zoom IQ feature, but they can still use these features without their data being harvested for training by manually opting out.

It is important to note that the Zoom IQ AI feature is disabled by default, and meeting administrators have the authority to enable it. When enabled, participants are notified with a pop-up message stating, “Meeting Summary has been enabled.” Users then have the option to enter the meeting, indirectly giving consent, or to leave the meeting. However, in a work context, skipping a meeting might not be feasible, making it a difficult choice for some individuals.

Zoom’s terms of service explicitly grant the company the right to store and distribute user data for training and tuning its AI models. However, a clause clarifies that Zoom will not use audio, video, or chat content without user consent. This aims to address concerns about potential misuse of personal data, particularly in creating deepfakes using AI.

ENBLE reached out to Zoom to understand what consent entails for training its AI model. In response, Zoom stated, “Zoom generative AI features are default off. Zoom account owners and administrators control whether to enable these AI features for their accounts and can opt out of providing their Customer Content to Zoom for model training at the time of enablement. Customers can change the account’s data sharing selection at any time.”

Despite the reassurances given by Zoom, the use of AI in gathering and analyzing user data raises legitimate concerns. Users must carefully consider the implications of sharing their personal information and make informed decisions regarding the use of AI features.
