However, he remains unfazed, referring to the decline in user numbers as a “normal” occurrence. Zuckerberg believes that Threads’ user base will grow as the app adds new features, such as a desktop version and the ability to search the platform’s content.

Threads garnered significant attention prior to its launch, creating high expectations among dissatisfied Twitter users who have been displeased with changes made by Elon Musk. Musk acquired Twitter for a staggering $44 billion in October 2022, leading many users to seek an alternative platform.

Meta doesn’t seem to be demotivated by the drop in the number of users regularly using Threads. In-fact, Meta believes that once Threads adds kew features, its popularity will gradually but steadily start to grow.

There are two main reasons why Metas Threads were an instant hit. Firstly, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the app right before it was launched. So, it caught the attention of all Twitter users who were against Elon Musk’s meddling with the app. Secondly, Threads has the advantage of being tightly integrated with Instagram, which is another of Meta’s apps boasting over a billion users. Because of this integration, it is very easy for people to open Threads accounts, find followers, and discover other accounts to follow. At launch, though Threads was similar to Twitter, it lacked a few key features typically found on microblogging apps. But, recently the development team has actively been working on the app’s usability. For instance, just the past week, it added a Following feed which meant users were able to see posts just from people they were following. This addition was made to complement the existing algorithmic feed.

Since April, Meta has lost over $170 billion in the stock market capitalization due to privacy and safety concerns. According to Reuters, some investors are even considering pulling out of Facebook, Meta’s flagship platform. The Current second most downloaded app is Meta’s Instagram in India, followed by TikTok. Post the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, some people have started to resent Facebook for not timely restraining app developers and not adequately protecting its users’ data. Though, it is quite impressive that despite the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook app users did not hesitate to fall for Threads and downloaded the app over a hundred million times as soon as it was launched.

So, we see that even though Threads had a great beginning, it is currently struggling with user engagement. However, considering Meta’s intention to make further improvements and the fact that it is backed by Instagram’s integration, the future looks hopeful for Threads.
