Samsung's Plan to Attract Gen Z to Z Flip 5 and Potential Success

The Iconic Return of the Flip Phone

Remember the days of Cher Horowitz, Serena van der Woodsen, and Lizzie McGuire? These 90s and early 2000s icons all had one thing in common: flip phones. These compact, stylish devices were once considered the ultimate tech status symbol for teenage girls. As a former flip phone enthusiast myself, I’ll never forget the feeling of superiority I had when rocking my trusty Motorola Razr at university. Endorsed by the iconic Paris Hilton, the Razr was the must-have phone of its time.

Fast forward to 2023, and it’s Sydney Sweeney’s turn to reignite the flip phone craze. Known for her roles in the hit HBO series Euphoria and The White Lotus, Sweeney is now teaming up with Samsung to promote the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. At a recent Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea, Samsung unveiled its latest lineup of devices, including the Z Flip 5, Z Fold 5, Tab S9, and Watch 6.

The new and improved Z Flip 5 boasts a larger cover screen and a new hinge that allows the phone to sit fully flat when open, with no gap when closed. According to Lisa Eadicicco from ENBLE, who has been using the Z Flip 5, it’s a “step in the right direction” for Samsung. Priced at $1,000, the Z Flip 5 will be available for pre-order starting August 11.

To appeal to its target audience of teen girls globally, Samsung has wisely enlisted the help of Sydney Sweeney. In an ad for the Z Flip 5, she describes the phone as a “gamechanger” for filming videos and emphasizes the option to personalize it to fit her own style. With retro pastel graphics, the ad is designed to be catnip to young women. But Samsung faces a challenge in convincing this audience that the Z Flip 5 should be their next upgrade.

It’s no secret that flip phones fell out of favor with the rise of smartphones. For the past 15 years, slimline slab smartphones have dominated the market. However, in recent years, Android phone manufacturers have been developing their own foldable phones, including new generations of the Razr and the recently introduced Google Pixel Fold. While foldable phones accounted for only 1.2% of phone shipments last year, according to IDC, Samsung has been leading the way in this category.

What sets the Z Flip 5 apart is its compact size. While most foldable phones are similar in size to standard smartphones, the Z Flip 5 is only half the size when folded. When unfolded, it expands to a size comparable to most smartphones, making it ideal for those who prefer a smaller device – including teenage girls, potentially.

Interestingly, there has been a resurgence of interest in “dumb” old-school flip phones among some teens, as reported by CNN and other media outlets. The vintage clamshell design of flip phones has the potential to pique the interest of Gen Z users, many of whom are loyal iPhone users. The Z Flip 5 offers the perfect combination of nostalgia and cutting-edge features.

It’s worth noting that Samsung’s marketing for the Z Flip 5 heavily features women and female influencers, contrasting with their male-dominated K-Pop band BTS promotions. Historically, Android phone users have skewed slightly male, but the Z Flip 5 could provide some real competition to the iPhone in attracting more female customers. According to CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood, the inclusion of Sydney Sweeney should “help drive interest in the product.”

However, one potential hurdle for the Z Flip 5 is its price. Foldable phones, in general, have struggled to gain mainstream traction due to their high price tags. The Z Flip 5, at $999, is more affordable than most foldable phones, but still a significant cost. Samsung has attempted to counter this by doubling the base storage to 256 GB, offering better value for the money in a market where inflationary stress is prevalent.

While the Z Flip 5 may not be the cheapest option, it stands out in a crowded market with its unique design and alluring features. If any phone has the potential to tempt Euphoria and K-Pop fans to embrace Android and foldable screen technology, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Z Flip 5 is the one to do it.

So, whether you’re a nostalgic fan of the iconic flip phone or a young person looking for a stylish, compact device, keep an eye out for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. This modern twist on a classic design may just capture your heart and revolutionize the way you use your smartphone.
