Mobile gaming has been gaining immense popularity in recent years, and the demand for powerful gaming devices is skyrocketing. While the perfect mobile gaming device is yet to be defined, industry giants like AMD and Qualcomm are vying to dominate the market with their cutting-edge technologies. Qualcomm, in particular, is making a strong case for being the go-to choice for game-focused handhelds across all price ranges with its Snapdragon G series chips.

Qualcomm has recently reached the reference design stage for its top-of-the-line G3x Gen 2 chipsets – processors designed for devices that boast the most advanced features and exceptional performance. Reference designs serve as a blueprint for manufacturers to design and build their own products based on a proven concept. This is the second generation of the G3 series, with the Razer Edge already employing the Gen 1 chip.

But what exactly sets these chips apart and qualifies them as the ideal choice for mobile gaming? The Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 chips pack a punch with features like active cooling, hardware ray tracing, haptic feedback, game upscaling capabilities, tethering with XR glasses, the latest Bluetooth generation for low-latency audio connections, and high-speed connectivity with WiFi 7 and 5G networks. The chips also support dual 3,000mAh batteries and offer upgradable storage options, ensuring extended gameplay without compromising quality.

While Qualcomm hasn’t announced any high-profile partnerships yet, it is collaborating with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that may not have widespread recognition. Nonetheless, these partnerships contribute to the creation of innovative and diverse gaming devices catering to a wide range of consumers.

The reference design for the G3x Gen 2 closely resembles its predecessor, with a slightly boxier form. When connected to XR glasses, it offers a tantalizing glimpse of the future of gaming by providing enhanced immersion and comfort. Looking forward, rather than downward, allows for a more ergonomic experience, especially during extended gaming sessions.

At present, the mobile gaming market is primarily dominated by Qualcomm and AMD. While AMD’s Ryzen processors have found success in expensive gaming devices like the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, as well as handhelds capable of running PC games such as the Valve Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally, Qualcomm Snapdragon chips power most Android devices, including gaming-focused gadgets like the Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge. The Nintendo Switch stands as an outlier, equipped with the relatively outdated Nvidia Tegra X1 chip from 2015. However, Nintendo’s lightweight, proprietary operating system and game optimization ensure a satisfactory gaming experience within the hardware’s limitations. The prospect of a successor to the Switch, equipped with Qualcomm or AMD chips, remains uncertain.

Addressing the more affordable end of the spectrum, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon G1 chip caters to devices primarily intended for local game streaming or cloud gaming services like GeForce Now and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Cloud Gaming. Since these devices solely process input, output, and video decoding, they don’t generate excessive heat, allowing for fanless designs that prioritize low input lag and optimized battery life. The G1 chip supports WiFi connectivity, but limited to WiFi 5, which may not provide the robustness required for seamless gaming when compared to WiFi 6 or 5G.

Sitting in the middle ground is the Snapdragon G2 chip, offering native mobile game support in addition to cloud gaming capabilities and improved networking. With WiFi 6/6E and 5G compatibility, the G2 chip provides enhanced connectivity for a seamless gaming experience.

While we’ll likely have to wait until CES 2024 for devices incorporating the Snapdragon G series chips to hit the market, rumors suggest that Razer might introduce a Gen 2 upgrade for its Edge handheld before then. The race to develop the ultimate mobile gaming device is on, and Qualcomm is positioning its Snapdragon G series chips as a force to be reckoned with, promising an unparalleled gaming experience for passionate gamers on the go.
