A Comprehensive Guide to Apple Products and Accessories: What’s Worth the Wait?

For over two decades, the ENBLE Buyer’s Guide has served as a valuable resource for keeping track of when Apple products were last updated1. Today, we’ll take a closer look at five current-generation Apple products and accessories that have not received hardware upgrades in several years, and provide some purchasing recommendations based on our own opinions and rumors.

iMac

iMac

Apple last updated the iMac in April 2021 with the M1 chip, a stunning 24-inch display, and an ultra-thin chassis available in seven vibrant color options2. However, if you’re thinking of getting an iMac now, you might want to hold off for a while. Rumors suggest that a new model with a faster M3 chip is expected to be released in late 2023 or early 20243. There are even reports that Apple has been experimenting with larger iMacs, possibly with a 32-inch display, although these may not be available until 2024 or 20254. So, our recommendation is to wait for the next iMac release unless it’s absolutely necessary.

AirPods Max

AirPods Max

Released in December 2020, the AirPods Max are approaching their three-year anniversary without any hardware updates5. Although they are still great headphones, if you’re in no rush, you might want to hold out a little longer. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a second-generation AirPods Max might be available in the second half of 2024 or the first half of 20256. The new model is rumored to come with exciting features like an H2 chip, improved noise cancellation, longer battery life, and more7. However, if you can’t wait, the recently launched Beats Studio Pro headphones could be a more affordable alternative to consider.

HomePod mini

HomePod mini

The HomePod mini, released in November 2020, is another Apple product that hasn’t received any hardware updates since its launch8. While a new HomePod mini is not expected until the second half of 2024, the current model still offers great value at $999. Apple recently enabled the temperature and humidity sensor in the existing model, adding new functionality while we wait for a new release10. So, if you need a smart speaker, the HomePod mini is still a worthwhile purchase considering its price.

Pro Display XDR

Pro Display XDR

The high-end Pro Display XDR has been on the market since December 2019, making it almost four years old11. Though it offers exceptional display quality, its premium price tag of $4,999 and lack of built-in camera and speakers may make you want to wait for the next model12. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on an updated version of the Pro Display XDR equipped with an Apple silicon chip13. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available regarding its release date or additional features14. So, if you can afford to wait, it might be worth holding off on purchasing the Pro Display XDR and considering the Studio Display, which offers a more affordable option with additional features.

Apple Pencil

Apple Pencil

The second-generation Apple Pencil made its debut in October 2018 and is now almost five years old15. While there haven’t been any credible rumors about a third-generation Apple Pencil yet, the current version still offers great functionality16. It can be detected while hovering above the display, providing users with a preview of their drawings, and it enhances the Scribble feature on the latest iPad Pro models17. So, if you’re in need of an Apple Pencil, there’s no urgent need to hold off on purchasing one. However, keep an eye out for any upcoming announcements, as they could introduce an updated version.

In summary, if you’re considering purchasing an iMac, AirPods Max, HomePod mini, Pro Display XDR, or Apple Pencil, it may be worth waiting for future updates or considering alternatives. Ultimately, the decision depends on your specific needs and how urgently you require these products. Nevertheless, Apple’s innovative technology and continuous upgrades ensure that whatever choice you make, you’ll likely end up with a quality product that enhances your digital experience.
