The Future of Gaming Monitors: OLED Taking the Lead

We’ve come a long way in the world of gaming monitors. In the near future, I wouldn’t be surprised if OLED panels become the top choice for PC gamers, surpassing IPS, VA, and high-refresh-rate TN panels. The LG 27GR95QE-B, along with a wave of new monitors, is a prime example of the almost perfect balance between features that gamers have been craving for years.

In the past, buying a gaming monitor meant sacrificing certain aspects. You had to choose between amazing color accuracy, deep blacks, high refresh rates, high resolution, and great viewing angles. IPS panels were ideal for bright rooms, VA for dark rooms, and TN for the highest refresh rates or budget options. But OLED panels have the potential to offer everything in a single screen, which is why they have become the preferred choice for high-end phones and TVs.

However, when it comes to using OLED panels as desktop monitors, there have been some challenges. They needed to match the size, controls, and address burn-in concerns associated with desktop PCs. The LG 27GR95QE-B and similar monitors have come pretty close to achieving this. With a few adjustments, such as increased brightness and a better warranty, these screens could truly win over even the most skeptical users.

OLED Perfection at a Price

The LG 27GR95QE-B is a 26.5-inch, 2560 x 1440 OLED screen with a 240Hz refresh rate. It boasts compatibility with Nvidia G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium, and a downscaled 4K resolution for consoles like the PS5 and Xbox. The monitor also features a USB hub and a remote for convenient control.

While the LG 27GR95QE-B is not the only monitor to feature this OLED panel (the Asus PG27AQDM is another option), it sets itself apart with its minimal compromises and impressive performance. As a long-time user of a 27-inch Asus TUF VG27AQ, switching to the LG OLED monitor felt seamless. The LG monitor fit perfectly into my existing setup without having to sacrifice screen size and only required minor adjustments to optimize space.

Embracing the OLED Experience

One of the biggest concerns with OLED monitors is burn-in, where static images can cause permanent damage to the screen. LG has implemented several features to combat this issue. The monitor includes a screen saver, automatic image and pixel cleaning cycles, and peak luminance control to dynamically adjust brightness based on the content being displayed.

Initially, the auto-brightness-limiting feature of the LG monitor was bothersome, as it would dim the screen in response to white objects on the display. However, after a firmware update, this irritation was eliminated. Working on an OLED screen that doesn’t dim abruptly is a game-changer, and the LG OLED panel performs exceptionally well in this regard.

The Brightness Dilemma and HDR Challenges

One of the trade-offs with OLED panels is their relatively lower brightness compared to other display technologies. While reviewers have measured the LG panel to deliver around 200 nits, far from the advertised 1,000-nit peak, it didn’t significantly affect my daily usage. However, brighter environments may require some adjustment.

HDR, which improves contrast and color accuracy, can enhance the OLED experience. Games like Gears 5 and Ori and the Will of the Wisps truly shine on the LG monitor, thanks to its incredible contrast and responsiveness. However, HDR implementation on Windows is not yet perfect, and some games may still have issues with compatibility and dimming. Streaming services also pose a challenge, as many of them are limited to 1080p HDR on Windows.

A Concerning Lack of Warranty Coverage

Despite the strengths of the LG 27GR95QE-B, there are a few concerns to consider. Firstly, the warranty coverage provided by LG is unclear, especially regarding burn-in. While some LG representatives have assured users that the chance of burn-in is low with proper usage and the provided protections, the actual warranty documentation contradicts this statement. It states that burn-in resulting from improper usage is not covered.

To protect against burn-in, LG has implemented a range of features such as screen savers, automatic image and pixel cleaning cycles, and peak luminance control. However, until LG clarifies its warranty terms and offers a more comprehensive coverage policy, some users may hesitate to invest in a desktop OLED monitor.

The Future of OLED Monitors

In the pursuit of the ideal OLED monitor, there are a few improvements that would make a significant difference. First and foremost, an increase in sustained brightness across the entire screen would address concerns regarding visibility in brighter environments. Additionally, a more robust warranty that covers burn-in would provide users with peace of mind and reinforce their trust in OLED technology for desktop use.

As technology continues to advance, OLED panels will likely become the preferred choice for gamers. With their impeccable color reproduction, true blacks, and responsiveness, OLED monitors offer an unparalleled viewing experience. The LG 27GR95QE-B, despite some minor drawbacks, showcases the incredible potential of OLED technology and paves the way for future innovations in the world of gaming monitors.
