iPhone 16: Leaks, Rumors, and Everything We Know So Far

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to hit store shelves in September 2024, but leaks of the next-generation flagship line have been flooding in even before the iPhone 15 was announced. Although it’s still early days, there are already whispers about some exciting upgrades for the iPhone 16 series that have Apple enthusiasts buzzing with anticipation. Here’s a compilation of everything we know so far about the iPhone 15’s successor.

iPhone 16 Release Date

The iPhone 16 release date is expected to be in September of next year, following Apple’s annual event showcasing the new handsets. Traditionally, iPhones are shipped about a week or two after the event. However, there have been instances in the past where Apple deviated from this schedule due to production delays. For example, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 14 Plus shipped in October. But, in general, iPhones roll out in September every year.

iPhone 16 Design

Let’s dive into arguably the most important aspect of the iPhone’s design: the screen. According to reliable leaker Unknownz21, the upper-tier iPhone 16 models will have slightly larger displays compared to their predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro is rumored to feature a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will pack a 6.9-inch panel. On the other hand, the lower-tier models, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, are expected to retain the same display sizes as their predecessors.

iPhone 15 screen sizes iPhone 16 screen sizes (rumored)
iPhone 15 – 6.1 inches iPhone 16 – 6.1 inches
iPhone 15 Plus – 6.7 inches iPhone 16 Plus – 6.7 inches
iPhone 15 Pro – 6.1 inches iPhone 16 Pro – 6.3 inches
iPhone 15 Pro Max – 6.7 inches iPhone 16 Pro Max – 6.9 inches

Renowned display analyst and Apple leaker, Ross Young, initially claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro models would have larger screens, with sizes of 6.2 inches and 6.8 inches. However, he later mentioned that the difference could be due to the variation between the actual display area and the viewable display area.

Another interesting design upgrade to be expected is the introduction of solid-state buttons. Initially planned for the iPhone 15 Pro models, these buttons simulate real button presses with haptic feedback. However, according to respected Apple leaker and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is now working on debuting solid-state buttons on the iPhone 16 Pro models instead. Kuo further adds that the iPhone 16 Pro models will feature two additional Taptic Engines for enhanced tangible feedback.

iPhone 16 Cameras

The iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced a new zoom lens with a “tetra-prism” design, allowing for telephoto capabilities without occupying excessive space. This innovation increased the Pro Max’s optical zoom from 3x to 5x. According to Chinese social media leaker Digital Chat Station (DCS), both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will inherit this new tetra-prism telephoto camera.

Moreover, tech analyst Jeff Pu reveals that the iPhone 16 Pro models will feature a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera with improved light gathering capabilities. This upgrade should enhance camera performance in dimly lit environments, adding more versatility to the iPhone’s photography capabilities.

Additionally, Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will introduce a stacked design for the rear cameras in the iPhone 16 Pro models. A stacked design increases light capture and provides a wider dynamic range, resulting in improved low-light photography and enhancing the performance of Night Mode.

iPhone 16 Specs

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 8GB of RAM, while the lower-tier models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, have 6GB of RAM. However, according to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to join the 8GB RAM club, offering a noticeable boost in performance.

On the chip front, there is a rumor that the A17 Pro’s successor will be less power-efficient compared to its predecessor, potentially impacting battery life. The next-generation chip is expected to provide substantial performance gains, though at the expense of power efficiency. It remains to be seen whether this rumor holds true.

Lastly, the iPhone 16 Pro models are rumored to support Wi-Fi 7, an upgrade from the current Wi-Fi 6E support. Wi-Fi 7 promises faster transfer speeds exceeding 40 Gbps, offering a significant improvement over what WiFi 6E can achieve.

While leaks and rumors are not always entirely accurate, they provide us with exciting glimpses into what the future holds for the iPhone 16 series.
