Rumors have been circulating about the specifications of the highly anticipated iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, and if tech analyst Jeff Pu’s predictions are correct, Apple fans are in for a treat. According to Pu, the next-generation iPhone models will boast a significant increase in memory, with a whopping 8GB of RAM. In addition, they will feature the powerful A17 Bionic chip, fabricated using TSMC’s N3E process.

Apple’s standard iPhone models have been equipped with 6GB of memory since the iPhone 13 in 2021. However, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to be the first iPhones to sport 8GB of memory, a feature that will eventually trickle down to the standard models in 2023. This upgrade in memory, coupled with the advanced A17 Bionic chip, promises to deliver improved performance and efficiency compared to previous models.

The A17 and A18 Bionic chips used in the iPhone 16 lineup will be manufactured using TSMC’s N3E process, an enhanced 3nm node. This is a significant advancement, as it marks Apple’s transition from the 5nm technique used in the A14, A15, and A16 chips to the more advanced 3nm fabrication process. The N3E process has fewer EUV layers and lower transistor density, making it more efficient in terms of performance. Although N3B is not compatible with TSMC’s successor processes, including N3P, N3X, and N3S, Apple will need to redesign its future chips to take full advantage of TSMC’s advancements.

Interestingly, rumors suggesting this transition from N3B to N3E were initially met with skepticism due to potential cost-cutting measures with reduced efficiency. However, it seems Apple is willing to make substantial changes in the A17 Bionic chip. This decision could result in a fundamentally different chip bearing the same name, which would be highly unusual. Apple’s previous plan was to use the N3B for the A16 Bionic chip but had to revert to N4 due to timing constraints. It is possible that Apple is utilizing the original N3B CPU and GPU core design meant for the A16 chips in the initial A17 models, with the intention of switching to the N3E process later in 2024.
