iOS 17 Exciting New Features for iPhone Users

Get Ready for the Exciting New Features of iOS 17

Apple Wonderlust Event

It’s that time of year again when Apple fans eagerly await the announcement of the latest products and updates from the tech giant. The upcoming Wonderlust event promises to unveil exciting new additions to the Apple ecosystem, including the highly anticipated iPhone 15 lineup, the Apple Watch Series 9, and the next iteration of the Apple Watch Ultra. While there is no official release date yet, it is expected that iOS 17 will be made available shortly after the event to the delight of Apple users worldwide.

As someone who switched from Android to iOS over a decade ago, I have been testing iOS 16 betas since last year. While iOS 17 may not fulfill all my iOS wishes, there are some standout features that I am particularly excited about. In this article, I will delve into these features, providing a comprehensive overview of what iOS 17 has in store for iPhone users.

StandBy Mode – Your iPhone as a Smart Display

StandBy Mode

One of the exciting new features in iOS 17 is StandBy mode. When enabled on a compatible iPhone, such as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max with their always-on displays, StandBy mode transforms your device into a smart display. This mode activates when your iPhone is charging and in landscape mode, allowing you to view useful information like the time, widgets, Live Activities, and more. Whether you have your phone charging in the kitchen while you cook or on your bedside table at night, StandBy mode enhances functionality by providing quick and convenient access to important information.

Open Camera App Modes with New Shortcuts Actions

Shortcuts App

iOS 17 introduces an exciting capability for the Camera app. With the latest public beta, users can utilize the Shortcuts app to create actions that open specific camera modes directly. No more fumbling through the Camera app to find the desired mode – you can now create shortcuts for Video, Portrait, and more. This feature not only saves time but also ensures you never miss capturing a special moment. Simply follow a few steps in the Shortcuts app, customize your shortcuts, and even add them to your home screen for quick and easy access.

72-Hour Passcode Grace Period

Passcode Grace Period

We’ve all been there – changing our passcode and then struggling to remember it later when trying to unlock our device. With iOS 17, Apple introduces a lifesaver feature for those forgetful moments. The new 72-hour passcode grace period allows you to use your old passcode to reset your new one within 72 hours. This feature provides a much-needed respite from the frustration and headache of being locked out of your device due to a forgotten passcode.

Autocorrect Gets an Upgrade

Ever battled with autocorrect, tirelessly attempting to type out those swear words that keep getting “corrected” to something else? Fear no more! iOS 17 enhances the autocorrect functionality of your iPhone’s keyboard with a transformer model, similar to what OpenAI uses in its language models. This upgrade not only improves the prediction of your next word but also assists with grammar, offering suggestions akin to word processing software like Microsoft Word. Say goodbye to wasted time and frustration as you no longer need to repeatedly retype those curse words; your iPhone finally understands your intentions.

New Journal App for Personal Reflection

Journal App

Journaling has long been hailed as a helpful practice for managing stress, achieving personal goals, and more. iOS 17 introduces a new journaling app aptly named Journal, set to be released later this year. While other journaling apps already exist, Apple’s version leverages on-device machine learning to generate personalized prompts, ensuring you have guidance during the journaling process. Additionally, you can schedule notifications to remind yourself to write. Rest assured, all your journal entries remain private with on-device processing, end-to-end encryption, and the option to lock the app for additional security. Whether you are a seasoned journaler or a beginner, the Journal app offers a convenient and accessible medium for personal reflection, even when you experience writer’s block.

Improved Messages Functionality

The iOS 17 update brings several improvements to the Messages app, enhancing communication and convenience. One notable new feature is Check In, allowing you to quickly and easily inform family and friends that you have reached your destination safely. Parents can also use this feature to ensure their children arrive safely at their friends’ houses. Additionally, iOS 17 introduces the ability to jump to the first unread message in a conversation, perfect for lively group chats where conversations can easily get lost. Replying to specific messages is now more straightforward with a simple swipe, eliminating the need for long holds and manual replies. Furthermore, iOS 17 introduces Live Stickers, enabling the creation of personalized stickers from your photos. Spice up your conversations and express yourself in a fun and creative way.

Contact Posters – Highly Customizable Contact Cards

Contact Posters

iOS 17 allows for even more customization with the introduction of Contact Posters. These highly customizable contact cards enable you to differentiate contacts using emoji pictures, edit colors and fonts, and more. This feature is not limited to your iPhone’s contacts; it also extends to third-party calling apps, adding a personalized touch to your communication experience. This integration of customizable features makes us wonder if Apple will continue to expand customization options for other apps and features in the future. Perhaps we’ll see the ability to edit display settings, colors, and fonts for different chats in Messages – the possibilities are exciting!

Simplify with Automatic Deletion of Password Verification Messages

Automatic Deletion

Tidiness enthusiasts rejoice! iOS 17 introduces the option to automatically delete verification code messages in Messages and Mail. Found under Password Options in Settings, the Clean Up Automatically feature removes messages containing verification codes once you’ve utilized them with AutoFill. This simple yet effective addition ensures that your Messages and Mail remain clutter-free, focusing only on important conversations rather than being inundated with numerous code-filled messages.

Streamline Grocery Shopping with Reminders

Grocery List

If you’re seeking a more organized approach to grocery shopping, iOS 17 has you covered. The Reminders app now allows users to create dedicated grocery lists. After updating to iOS 17, open a new reminder and access List Info to select the Groceries list type. Once enabled, Reminders will automatically categorize grocery items, separating them into sections such as Produce and Breads & Cereals. This feature eliminates the need for chaotic lists and ensures you can easily navigate the store, saving time and minimizing frustration.

Conversation Awareness on AirPods Pro

Conversation Awareness

For AirPods Pro users, iOS 17 brings an exciting new feature known as Conversation Awareness. When engaged, your AirPods Pro will recognize when you start talking, automatically lowering the volume of your music, reducing background noise, and amplifying the voices in front of you. This convenient addition eliminates the need to fumble with your AirPods or iPhone to adjust the volume when someone approaches, making interactions seamless and hassle-free. While the initial implementation is impressive, one can’t help but speculate about potential future enhancements that enable AirPods to recognize when someone within a certain range is talking, automatically lowering the volume accordingly.

Improved Siri Experience

Say goodbye to the familiar “Hey, Siri” greeting. With iOS 17, interacting with Siri becomes even easier, mirroring the functionality of other digital assistants like Amazon’s Alexa. Simply say “Siri,” and the digital assistant will activate, ready to assist you with your questions and commands. Of course, you can continue greeting Siri politely, as a little respect can go a long way, especially if there’s a hypothetical robot uprising in the future!

Furthermore, iOS 17 allows for back-to-back Siri requests, promoting a more conversational interaction. Once you activate Siri, you can seamlessly request multiple tasks without needing to say “Hey Siri” again for each one. This improved conversation flow makes interacting with Siri feel more natural and intuitive.

Enhanced Sharing with AirDrop and NameDrop

Sharing content with others becomes seamless with the enhanced functionality of AirDrop and the new NameDrop feature. In the next iOS version, you no longer need to stay within range of another person to complete an AirDrop transfer. As long as you initiated the process within range, you can move freely while the transfer finishes. The new SharePlay feature allows you to start listening to music or watching a video with others by bringing your iPhones close together, providing a unique and interactive sharing experience.

NameDrop is another exciting addition, enabling the quick sharing of contact information by simply bringing your iPhone or Apple Watch close to another person’s device. This feature enhances convenience and makes exchanging contact details easier than ever.

Protect Yourself with Sensitive Content Warnings

Sensitive Content

To protect against unwanted explicit images or videos, iOS 17 introduces sensitive content warnings. This feature allows you to blur such content before viewing it in various apps, including Messages, AirDrop, Contact Posters, FaceTime, and even third-party apps. By implementing these warnings, Apple aims to prevent the unsolicited sharing of explicit content, encouraging safer and more respectful digital interactions.

iOS 17 was released to developers on Monday, with beta testers gaining access to the software in July. The general public can look forward to experiencing iOS 17 in the fall. This upcoming update, packed with exciting new features, will undoubtedly enhance the iPhone user experience and solidify Apple’s position as an industry leader in innovation and user-centric design.
