Intel’s 14th-Gen Meteor Lake CPUs Embrace AI for Power Efficiency


Intel has been making headlines with its upcoming 14th-gen CPUs, and while the desktop processors may only offer a minor refresh, the mobile series is shaping up to be quite exciting. During this year’s Hot Chips conference at Stanford University, Intel executives confirmed that the 14th-gen Meteor Lake series would be driven by artificial intelligence (AI).

The use of AI in Meteor Lake chips will revolutionize power management and the transition between active and low-power states. This innovation, known as the “Intel Energy Efficiency Architecture,” will enable future Intel products, including client processors, to make efficient use of power. The goal is to ensure immediate responsiveness to user actions while maximizing power efficiency.

“We care very much about responsiveness when we interact with the computer. We want an immediate action, and we don’t want to wait too much,” said Efraim Rotem, a member of Intel’s Design Engineering Group.

Traditionally, boosting performance involves directing additional power to the processor, allowing it to operate at higher speeds and complete tasks more quickly. However, the CPU needs to determine when a task is completed before transitioning to a low-power mode. This concept, known as Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), poses a challenge in determining the optimal frequency at which the processor should operate.

To tackle this challenge, Intel has developed an AI algorithm that can understand and predict user behavior. The algorithm learns how users interact with webpages, scans content, and proceeds to the next task. What’s remarkable is that the algorithm autonomously learns these processes, surpassing the level of detail that Intel had initially programmed.

The use of AI in the Meteor Lake processors offers significant improvements in responsiveness. According to Rotem, the time it takes for the CPU to transition to a high-power state can be reduced by up to 35%. Moreover, the algorithm can determine the optimal time to switch to a low-power state, resulting in potential energy savings of up to 15% compared to previous configurations. It is important to note that this energy optimization is different from the broader metric of overall power consumption.

While Intel is yet to confirm a launch date for the Meteor Lake series of mobile processors, rumors suggest that they will hit the market in October 2023. However, eager fans won’t have to wait too long for further updates, as Intel is planning to hold the Intel Innovation conference in San Jose on September 19. This event could potentially unveil more details about the new laptop CPUs.
