There’s no denying that Apple’s MacBook Pro 16 is one of the best laptops on the market. It boasts exceptional build quality, powerful performance, and superior features like a stunning display, keyboard, and touchpad. However, it also comes with a hefty price tag. Enter the HP Envy 16 2023, a laptop that offers similar performance and features at a much more affordable price. Could it possibly challenge the mighty MacBook Pro? Let’s dive into the specs and configurations to find out.

Specs and Configurations

When reviewing the Envy 16, we found several configurations available. The entry-level model starts at $1,350 and includes a Core i5-13500H processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, an Intel Arc A370M GPU, and a 16-inch WQXGA IPS display at 120Hz. At the high end, you can spend $2,685 for a Core i9-13900H, 32GB of RAM, a 2TB SSD, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060, and a 2.8K OLED display at 120Hz. We had the opportunity to review the $1,750 configuration, which featured a Core i9 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, the RTX 4060 GPU, and an IPS panel.

On the other hand, the MacBook Pro 16 comes at a much higher starting price of $2,500. The base model includes an M2 Pro CPU with 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina Mini-LED display. If you max out the configurations, you’ll be shelling out a staggering $6,500 for an M2 Max CPU with 12 CPU cores, 38 GPU cores, 96GB of RAM, and an 8TB SSD.

While the Envy 16 offers similar performance at a fraction of the cost, it’s important to note that performance isn’t everything.

Design and Build Quality

The MacBook Pro 16 is crafted from solid chunks of aluminum and exudes elegance and quality. Its aesthetic is simple yet refined, setting it apart from most other laptops. However, the Envy 16 holds its ground in terms of build quality and aesthetics. While it may not surpass the MacBook Pro 16 in terms of look and feel, it certainly holds its own. One notable difference is the presence of a notch in the MacBook’s display, which some people may not appreciate.

Regarding input devices, the Envy 16’s keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience with ample key travel and snappy switches. Its touchpad, though slightly smaller than ideal, offers smooth and confident clicks. However, the MacBook Pro 16 takes input devices to the next level. With the latest Magic Keyboard, it boasts excellent key spacing, comfortable key size, and responsive switches. The Force Touch haptic touchpad is large and highly responsive, offering functionalities that go beyond what a mechanical keyboard can provide.

In terms of connectivity, the Envy 16 wins for users who rely on legacy ports. However, the MacBook Pro 16 offers an additional Thunderbolt 4 port, a full-size SD card reader, and an HDMI port. Both laptops feature the latest wireless connectivity options.

When it comes to webcams, the Envy 16 has a 5MP camera, while the MacBook Pro 16 boasts a 1080p webcam. Both deliver quality images for videoconferencing. The Envy 16 also features an infrared camera for Windows 11 Hello facial recognition, while the MacBook Pro 16 incorporates a Touch ID fingerprint reader.

Performance

The Envy 16 offers various configurations with Intel’s 13th-gen 45-watt CPUs. In our review, we tested the highest-end model with a Core i9-13900H processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU. In CPU-intensive benchmarks, the Envy 16 outperformed both the previous model MacBook Pro 16 and the latest MacBook Pro 14. These results held true for single-core and multi-core scores. The Envy 16 also excelled in the Pugetbench Premiere Pro benchmark, which leverages GPU processing in Adobe’s Premiere Pro.

While the MacBook Pro 16 may deliver better performance in apps optimized for its M2 processor, the Envy 16 holds its own in typical applications used by creators. This achievement is impressive considering the significant price difference between the two laptops.

Display and Audio

The Envy 16 review unit featured a 16-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1800. Although it may not match the MacBook Pro’s 16.2-inch Mini-LED panel, which boasts a resolution of 3456 x 2234, the Envy 16’s display is sufficient for productivity tasks. It lacks the same level of brightness, color accuracy, and contrast as the MacBook Pro’s Mini-LED display. However, the Envy 16 also offers a 16-inch OLED panel at 2880 x 1800, which enhances color reproduction and contrast. The MacBook Pro 16 remains the top choice for HDR content consumption.

In terms of audio quality, the MacBook Pro 16 takes the lead with its six-speaker setup. It delivers exceptional audio with clear mids, highs, and deep bass. While the Envy 16’s quad speakers do a decent job, they can’t compare to the audio experience provided by the MacBook Pro 16.

Portability and Battery Life

Both the MacBook Pro 16 and the Envy 16 are large laptops that you’ll undoubtedly notice as you carry them in your backpack. However, the MacBook Pro 16 is thinner and lighter.

When it comes to battery life, the MacBook Pro 16 once again outshines its competition. It offers impressive battery life, nearly doubling what the Envy 16 can achieve. If you need a laptop that can last all day and beyond, the MacBook Pro 16 is the better choice.

The Verdict: Envy 16 for Budget Shoppers, MacBook Pro 16 for Refinement

The HP Envy 16 2023 is an excellent option for budget-conscious shoppers. It provides equivalent performance and similar features at a significantly lower price. If you need a fast machine with a great display and have limited funds, the Envy 16 is a commendable choice.

However, overall, the MacBook Pro 16 offers a more refined experience. Its superior display, exquisite build quality, and exceptional battery life set it apart from the competition. Add to that the best audio experience available on a laptop, and the MacBook Pro 16 justifies its premium price tag.

So, if you’re willing to splurge for a truly top-tier laptop experience, the MacBook Pro 16 is worth every penny.
