Google Introduces SafeSearch to Filter Explicit Content

Google has recently announced the release of its new SafeSearch setting, which will automatically filter explicit and graphic adult content from search results. This feature will be available to all users globally, making the online experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

The SafeSearch option was initially introduced as a parental controls feature to protect users under family accounts from stumbling upon explicit imagery while using Google Search. However, in 2021, Google expanded this feature and made it a default setting for users under 18 on Family Link, Google’s family safety hub.

This recent update from Google ensures that users of all ages can benefit from the SafeSearch function. By default, explicit images, including gore, violence, and graphic adult content, will be flagged and blurred in search results. This not only protects children but also enhances the overall user experience by eliminating disturbing or inappropriate content.

In addition to SafeSearch, Google has made it easier for users to access and manage parental controls. Simply by typing relevant search phrases such as “google parental controls” or “google family link,” an information box will appear, providing users with easy access to parental control settings and management.

It’s important to note that while the SafeSearch blur option will be a standard feature in Google Images, users will still have control over their settings. The setting can be adjusted or turned off at any time in their account settings, unless it has been locked by a guardian or school network administrator. Parents or caregivers can manage child accounts through the Family Link app, and administrators can manage SafeSearch settings for users under 18 associated with a Google Workspace for Education account or a K-12 institution.

These recent policy updates from Google demonstrate the company’s commitment to enhancing online safety and protecting users from explicit content. By defaulting to a filtered search experience, Google aims to create a positive and secure environment for all its users.
