In response to the rising concerns, governments worldwide have started taking actions to regulate AI-generated content. China, for instance, made it mandatory in January to label content produced with artificial intelligence. The European Union has also begun implementing similar rules. Governments and regulators demand that AI-generated content be labeled appropriately to inform viewers about its origin.

As a result, companies like Google, after a White House meeting last month, have made commitments to develop watermarking systems. SynthID from DeepMind is a significant contribution towards fulfilling these commitments. However, as of now, the tool will only be available to some paying customers of Google’s cloud computing business. It is designed specifically for content produced using the Imagen art generator. Nevertheless, Google has plans to expand the availability of SynthID across additional AI models and integrate it with other products in the future.

As the US, India, and the UK approach their respective elections, governments and regulators are keeping a close eye on the progress made in combating AI-generated misinformation. SynthID’s emergence offers hope in the fight against deceptive media while ensuring that viewers can trust the authenticity of the content they consume.
