š Google Cloud Unveils New AI Products to Revolutionize Retail Industry
Google Cloud Launches Tailored Gen AI Solutions to Coincide with Major Retail Conference in New York
Google Cloud has launched new AI products specifically designed for retailers. The brand calls them ENBLE.
Google wants to bring a little bit of generative AI magic into the world of retail. And theyāre willing to go all out in their pursuit. Recently, at the National Retailer Associationās annual conference in NYC, Google Cloud made some groundbreaking announcements. They introduced a range of new gen AI products that promise to revolutionize the way retailers personalize their online shopping experiences and streamline their back-office operations.
While I didnāt get an opportunity to personally test these new tools (Google, hook me up!), the flurry of announcements indicates just how aggressively Google is attempting to win over gen AI customers. Letās dive deeper into these exciting new products and see what they have in store!
Conversational Commerce Solution: The Chit-Chat of the Future
Imagine having a brand-specific chatbot on your favorite retailerās website or mobile app, engaging in a lively conversation about your shopping needs and providing tailored product suggestions based on your individual preferences. Well, now you donāt have to imagine anymore! Google Cloudās Conversational Commerce Solution allows retailers to embed these gen AI-powered agents, creating a dynamic and personalized shopping experience.
Branded chatbots are nothing new, but Google brings something fresh to the table. Their agents are powered by āsophisticatedā models like PaLM, fine-tuned and customized with the retailerās own data. This means your conversations will feel more human-like and relevant than ever before. Itās like having a personal shopping assistant right at your fingertips!
Catalog and Content Enrichment: Turning Photos into Descriptions
Have you ever struggled to come up with the perfect product description or spent endless hours categorizing your inventory? Well, Google Cloud has your back! Their Catalog and Content Enrichment toolset combines the power of gen AI models, including PaLM and Imagen, to automatically generate product descriptions, metadata, categorization suggestions, and more.
With just a single product photo, this toolset can work its magic and provide you with a wealth of information. But it doesnāt stop there! Retailers can also generate new product images from existing ones or even let AI generate images based on product descriptions. Itās like having a team of creative geniuses working round the clock to enhance your product listings.
Addressing Concerns: From Hallucinations to Hot Water
Now, some naysayers might argue that relying on AI-generated content can lead to unexpected results. Remember eBayās similar attempt to convert product images into descriptions? Sellers soon voiced their concerns about misleading and repetitive text, causing quite a stir.
To address these concerns, I spoke with Amy Eschliman, the managing director of retail at Google Cloud. While she didnāt delve into specific measures, she emphasized that Google is continuously improving its tools, and human review plays a pivotal role in the Catalog and Content Enrichment workflows. Phew, thatās a relief! We certainly donāt want retailers getting in hot water with shoppers or facing false advertising allegations due to misleading AI-generated content.
The New Kid on the Block: Distributed Cloud Edge
Google also unveiled a retail-specific Distributed Cloud Edge device. This managed self-contained hardware kit aims to āreduce IT costs and resource investmentsā associated with retail gen AI. Available in various sizes, from single-server to multi-server configurations, this edge cluster can fit seamlessly into different types of stores, from convenience marts to grocery stores.
But why is this device so special? Well, it ensures non-stop operations, even when the storeās internet connection goes haywire for short periods of time (days, to be precise). With this hardware and software combo, retailers can run existing software and leverage distributed AI for their mission-critical operations. Itās like having an AI powerhouse in your local store, making sure everything runs smoothly!
Are Retailers Ready for the Gen AI Revolution?
With all these exciting advancements, one question remains: Are retailers truly ready to embrace gen AI? The industry behemoths seem to think so! Walmart recently announced heavy investments in gen AI search, aiming to understand the context of queries better and enable shoppers to search by specific use cases (unicorn-themed toddler birthday party, anyone?). Meanwhile, Amazon has been tapping into gen AI to summarize customer reviews, assist sellers in writing catchy product descriptions, create image captions, and help buyers find the perfect fit.
According to a poll conducted by Google, 81% of retail decision-makers feel an āurgencyā to adopt gen AI in their businesses. Furthermore, 72% believe theyāre ready to deploy gen AI technology today, particularly in areas such as customer service automation, marketing support, product description generation, creative assistance, conversational commerce, and store associate knowledge and support.
However, itās important to note that some gen AI rollouts in the retail industry have had their fair share of hiccups. Amazonās review summaries, for example, have been known to exaggerate negative feedback (oops!). So, whether the retail industry will wholeheartedly embrace gen AI remains to be seen. Only time will tell if the gen AI revolution will dawn upon us or fizzle out like a damp firework.
