Every year, Gartner releases its highly-anticipated Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, highlighting the most promising tech advancements to watch out for. In the 2023 report, one technology climbed to the top of the hype cycle: generative AI.

Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies is a comprehensive study that dives into more than 2,000 technologies, identifying key insights and frameworks. The selected emerging technologies are projected to bring transformational benefits within two to 10 years. According to Gartner, generative AI is expected to reach this milestone within two to five years. Transformational benefit refers to technologies that enable “new ways of doing business across industries that will result in major shifts in industry dynamics.”

The exponential rise of generative AI can be attributed to the release of ChatGPT in November, which brought the technology into the mainstream spotlight. This breakthrough sparked increased research and awareness, leading to numerous transformative applications of generative AI.

“The massive pretraining and scale of AI foundation models, viral adoption of conversational agents, and the proliferation of generative AI applications are heralding a new wave of workforce productivity and machine creativity,” says Arun Chandrasekaran, distinguished VP analyst at Gartner.

While generative AI dominates the AI landscape, there are several other emergent AI technologies within the AI umbrella that show potential for causing significant societal change. Gartner’s report highlights AI simulation, causal AI, federated machine learning, graph data science, neuro-symbolic AI, and reinforcement learning as emerging AI technologies to watch out for.

“In addition to generative AI, several other emerging AI techniques offer immense potential for enhancing digital customer experiences, making better business decisions, and building sustainable competitive differentiation,” states Gartner in the report.

Interestingly, the 2022 hype cycle did not feature generative AI as a distinct category. However, it did include subsections such as casual AI, machine learning, generative design AI, foundation models, and digital humans. This omission further emphasizes the rapid evolution and significance of generative AI within the AI landscape.

Beyond AI, Gartner also identifies developer experience (DevX), pervasive cloud, human-centric privacy, and security as emerging technology trend themes for the coming years. These areas hold immense potential for transforming industries, improving user experiences, and addressing privacy and security concerns.

As generative AI continues to pave the way for new possibilities, its influence will be felt across various sectors. From healthcare to finance, entertainment to manufacturing, generative AI is set to revolutionize the way we work, create, and interact with technology. It’s a new era where human creativity and machine intelligence converge, propelling us into a future that promises unprecedented productivity and innovation.
