Samsung has been leading the way in the foldable phone market with its Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. These phones have received high praise for their craftsmanship and user experience. However, their reign at the top might be short-lived as Honor, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, is set to unveil not one, but two new folding smartphones at the upcoming IFA technology trade show on September 1.

Before we dive into why this announcement by Honor is significant, let’s provide some context. Honor, although not present in the U.S. market, sells its smartphones in the U.K. and other parts of the world. The annual IFA trade show takes place in Berlin and serves as a platform for companies to showcase their latest innovations. Last year, Honor launched the Honor Magic Vs folding phone at the event, which subsequently made its way to the U.K. in early 2023. Therefore, it is highly likely that the devices unveiled at this year’s IFA will have a global launch.

Honor, once a part of the Huawei family, separated from the company after facing U.S. restrictions on component sales. Since then, Honor has flourished as an independent brand, releasing a range of devices, including phones and smartwatches, equipped with Google Services and 5G connectivity. The Honor Magic Vs, with its excellent hardware and affordable price point, showcased the brand’s commitment to design and quality.

Now, let’s focus on what’s new. Honor has already announced one of the two foldable smartphones it will be showcasing at IFA – the Honor Magic V2. This incredibly thin device measures only 4.7mm when unfolded and 9.9mm when folded, making it thinner than its competitors. With a weight of 231 grams, it is also quite light. The Magic V2 features top-of-the-line specifications, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a 50MP main and wide-angle camera, a 20MP telephoto camera, a 5,000mAh battery, a 7.92-inch inner screen, and a 6.43-inch cover screen.

While the Honor Magic V2 is confirmed, the second folding smartphone remains a mystery. However, it is not far-fetched to imagine that Honor may release a compact folding phone to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola’s Razr 40 and Razr Plus. If this is the case, Honor will become the first major brand to offer both large and small folding smartphones outside of China. For instance, Oppo released the Oppo Find N2 Flip only in the U.K., while keeping the Oppo Find N2 exclusive to China.

Before we get too carried away with the excitement, there is a possibility that Honor may be counting two versions of the Honor Magic V2 as two separate foldables. The standard model and the Honor Magic V2 Ultimate, which features an eco-leather back, additional RAM, more storage, and a stylus called the Magic Pen. Regardless, the success of the Honor Magic V2 and the mysterious second phone is crucial for Honor. The previous Magic Vs faced criticism for being released late and lacking an impressive camera. Therefore, Honor needs to ensure the Magic V2 meets expectations and hits store shelves soon after its IFA launch if it wants to be a viable alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The company promises a “beautiful fusion of tech, fashion, and sustainability.” This announcement by Honor is highly anticipated, as competition in the foldable space is much needed. Stay tuned for all the exciting updates from the event!
