When Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 5, there was a lot of finger-pointing regarding the camera. People were quick to compare it to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, and concluded that there were no significant upgrades. But is this indignation justified? To find out, we need to take a closer look at the camera performance of the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 compared to its predecessor.

The Galaxy Z Flip Cameras

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a pair of 12-megapixel cameras for main and wide-angle duties on the back, along with a 10-megapixel selfie camera at the top of the screen. These specifications are exactly the same as the Galaxy Z Flip 4, leading people to doubt any significant improvements. However, despite the identical hardware, Samsung has made internal changes. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor, along with its specially tuned image signal processor and software enhancements for improved low-light performance. Samsung has also incorporated new lenses for the Z Flip 5 cameras, similar to the changes seen in the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

In our comparison, we noticed some interesting differences between the first two photos taken with the main camera. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 displayed better texture handling, with improved focus and tone. The photo taken in low light also showed more detail and texture compared to the Z Flip 4. While the Z Flip 4’s white balance was slightly more accurate, the Z Flip 5’s image featured more natural colors. Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 outperformed the Z Flip 4 in this category.

The differences between the wide-angle cameras of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Flip 4 were negligible. While the Z Flip 5 exhibited more natural-looking saturation levels, the exposure and colors were almost identical. The level of detail, noise, and smoothing were also very similar. In terms of wide-angle camera performance, it was a draw between the two devices.

Portrait mode didn’t bring any major differences between the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Flip 4. Both devices handled edge and depth recognition accurately, providing ample detail and similar exposure and background detail. The contrast levels were slightly different, resulting in subtle variations in colors between the two photos. Ultimately, it was another draw in this category.

Night mode showcased some differences between the two devices. While the Galaxy Z Flip 5 produced more colorful photos, it was also prone to misjudging white balance and focus in certain situations. On the other hand, the Z Flip 4 maintained more controlled and natural-looking images, with sharper details. However, both devices had their moments of excellence and inconsistency in low-light conditions, making it difficult to determine a clear winner.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs. Flip 4: Selfie Camera

There was no contest when it came to the selfie cameras. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 captured more detail, accurate skin tones, vibrant colors, and a more natural bokeh effect in portrait mode. In addition, the Z Flip 5’s better cover screen provided an improved user experience for selfies compared to the Z Flip 4’s smaller and less detailed screen. For the selfie camera category, the winner was undeniably the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Although the Galaxy Z Flip 5 emerged as the winner of our camera comparison, it didn’t completely outshine the Z Flip 4. The upgrades in the Z Flip 5’s camera resulted in improved performance, but not remarkable differences. If you already own a Galaxy Z Flip 4, the camera alone may not be a compelling reason to upgrade, unless you heavily rely on selfies. The real reasons to consider upgrading from the Z Flip 4 to the Z Flip 5 lie in other hardware changes, such as the larger, feature-packed cover screen. As we look to the future, we hope for more exciting advancements in the Galaxy Z Flip 6, perhaps even incorporating a telephoto camera and optical zoom. However, for now, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 proves itself as an excellent choice for those seeking a foldable smartphone with a great camera.
