Ever since Hong Kong legalized cryptocurrency trading last June, blockchain projects from the West have been paying attention to the Asian financial hub. One standout network is Aptos, developed by former Meta employees and backed by a16z and Tiger Global.

📣 DeFi Takes Center Stage

Aptos, a Layer 1 blockchain network, has announced that it will be hosting a DeFi event in Hong Kong this April. Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is gaining popularity as it seeks to replace traditional banking intermediaries with decentralized technology. This event is set to bring together industry players and enthusiasts who are passionate about the future of finance.

💡 Why Hong Kong? Why Now?

According to Mo Shaikh, co-founder and CEO of Aptos, the resurgence of interest in disrupting traditional financial systems and the significant focus on web3 in Hong Kong cannot be ignored. There has been an incredible amount of activity and appetite for innovation, evident through engagements with companies like Alibaba, Tencent, and financial institutions like HSBC.

During a recent Twitter Space hosted by Aptos, conducted entirely in Mandarin Chinese, over 45,000 listeners tuned in. These numbers highlight the growing interest and excitement surrounding blockchain technology in Hong Kong.

Mainland China vs. Hong Kong

While mainland China bans all forms of cryptocurrency trading, Hong Kong offers a sandbox for experimentation in the web3 space. This distinction allows the Hong Kong blockchain ecosystem to thrive without incurring financial volatility for the rest of the country.

👐 Collaboration and Expansion

Aptos has already been working with Alibaba to engage with web3 developers in Asia. Both companies have announced plans to jointly host hackathons using Move, the open-source programming language developed by Meta. On the Aptos blockchain, Move is used to write smart contracts, which are lines of code that execute predetermined terms of agreements. This collaboration demonstrates the potential for partnerships to drive innovation in the blockchain space.

🚀 The JamboPhone: Expanding Reach

Aptos is not only focusing on Asian markets but also has its sights set on emerging markets worldwide. One of its ambitious projects is the JamboPhone, a collaboration between Aptos and Jambo, a startup based in Congo. The JamboPhone, priced at $99, is preinstalled with the Aptos-compatible wallet Petra and is available in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. This device aims to be the “web3 super app” by providing new forms of digital money and creating real value for those left out of the traditional financial system.

💡📱 Different Strokes for Different Folks

In comparison, Layer 1 blockchain Solana has introduced the Saga phone, targeting a different demographic with its $1,000 price tag. This highlights the versatility and range of options for users looking to adopt web3 technologies.

🤔 The Regulation Question

When asked about the availability of Aptos-based DeFi services in Hong Kong, Mo Shaikh refrained from speculating on regulation. However, he believes that Hong Kong regulators are moving in the right direction, providing clarity for entrepreneurs to build and innovate. This positive trend bodes well for Aptos and the growth of the blockchain ecosystem in Hong Kong.

📈 The Future of Web3 in Asia

The increasing interest in blockchain technology in Hong Kong reflects the ongoing global shift towards web3 and decentralized finance. These developments are not only reshaping financial systems but also providing new opportunities for inclusive participation in emerging markets. Aptos is at the forefront of this exciting movement and continues to lead the way in driving innovation and collaboration within the blockchain community.
