The Importance of Private DNS Mode on Android: Protecting Your Privacy and Security

Nearly everything you do on your connected devices begins with a Domain Name System (DNS) query. So, when searching in your web browser’s address bar or using just about any app on your mobile device, DNS is at work.

The problem is that standard DNS isn’t secure, meaning all your queries are sent over the network as plain text. This poses a significant risk to your privacy and security, especially when connected to public networks.

Let’s say you’re sitting at a coffee shop, typing away on your Android device, searching for things or accessing work tools through a Content Management System (CMS). You don’t want others on the same network to know what you’re browsing or working on. Well, if someone with the right skills intercepts your search queries or the URLs you visit, they can gain access to sensitive information.

But fear not! There’s a solution to this problem, and it’s called Private DNS Mode. By enabling this feature on your Android device, all your DNS queries will become encrypted. Even if someone manages to capture the packets, they won’t be able to view the content. In other words, Private DNS Mode is a must-have for anyone who values their privacy and security.

Now, let’s dive into how you can enable Private DNS Mode on your Android device:

Step 1: Open Network & Internet Open the Settings app on your Android device and tap on “Network & Internet.” If you’re using a Samsung Galaxy device, you can find it under “Settings > More Connection Settings.”

Step 2: Enable Private DNS Scroll down to find the entry for Private DNS within the Network & Internet settings. On Galaxy devices, it will be located in the middle of the More Connections settings list. If you can’t find it, go back to the main Settings page and search for “Private DNS.”

Step 3: Add a Provider that Offers Secure DNS This step can be a bit tricky but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. To enable Private DNS, you need the address of a provider that offers this service. Here’s my provider of choice: 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com.

Here are some other popular DNS providers you can consider:

  • Google DNS: dns.google
  • Quad9: dns.quad9.net
  • CleanBrowsing DNS: security-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org
  • Open DNS: 208.67.222.222
  • NextDNS: 45.90.28.0
  • Comodo Secure: 8.26.56.26
  • OpenNIC: 192.95.54.3

Although all of these free DNS services are worth trying, I highly recommend going with Cloudflare’s DNS (1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com) as it is known for its exceptional speed and security. Additionally, Cloudflare offers DNS filtering, adding an extra layer of protection against malicious IP addresses.

When you tap on Private DNS, a new pop-up will appear. Tap on “Private DNS Provider Hostname” and type in the hostname of your preferred DNS provider.

You can also choose the “Automatic” option, which will switch to Google’s Private DNS when available. However, if you have concerns about trusting Google with this feature, I suggest manually entering the address for your chosen DNS provider. After providing the hostname, tap “Save” to enable the new setting.

That’s it! You have successfully enabled Private DNS on your Android device, ensuring that all your DNS queries will be encrypted. Enjoy the added privacy and security.
