Personal Voice: Clone Your Own Voice with AI on iOS 17

AI technology has made its way into numerous aspects of our lives, from language models to AI-generated music. And now, Apple has introduced a groundbreaking feature in the iOS 17 public beta that allows users to clone their own voice. With Personal Voice, individuals with speech disabilities can communicate using their own voice, eliminating barriers and enhancing accessibility.

The Power of Personal Voice

Personal Voice utilizes AI to create a replica of your own voice, which is then stored on your iPhone. This revolutionary feature enables individuals with speech disorders to use type-to-speak functionality through various mediums like the iPhone’s speakers, FaceTime, and third-party applications that will support this accessibility feature when iOS 17 is released to the general public later this year. However, even if you don’t have a speech disorder, Personal Voice can still be an intriguing addition to your iPhone experience.

How to Set Up Personal Voice on iOS 17

To begin the process of cloning your own voice, ensure that you are in a relatively quiet environment where you won’t be disturbed for approximately 30 minutes. While background noise doesn’t have to be completely eliminated, speaking clearly and without distractions will help ensure a high-quality cloned voice.

  1. Open your iPhone running iOS 17 and navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice.
  2. Tap on Create a Personal Voice at the top of the screen.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions, tapping the blue Continue button twice.
  4. Give your voice clone a name, then hit the record button and start reading the provided phrases out loud.
    • You’ll need to read a total of 150 phrases, which vary in length.
    • Speak when the phrase on the screen says “Listening,” and Personal Voice will automatically move to the next phrase without any additional action required.
    • You can re-record a phrase if you make a mistake by pressing the record button.
    • The entire process takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your speaking speed.
Personal Voice Settings

Once you have completed reading all the phrases, tap Continue, and the creation process for your Personal Voice will begin. To allow for optimal processing, connect your iPhone to a charger and lock your screen. You will receive a notification when your Personal Voice is ready to use. It typically takes around two days for the process to complete, but this duration can vary.

Please note that iOS 17 is currently in beta, so there may be bugs or issues that could impact the functionality of Personal Voice.

Using Personal Voice on iOS 17

Once you receive the notification indicating that your Personal Voice is ready, you can start testing and utilizing this exciting feature.

  1. Access the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to Accessibility > Live Speech.
  3. Toggle on the Live Speech feature at the top of the screen.
  4. Go to the Voices section and select your newly created Personal Voice (should appear at the top of the list).
Live Speech Feature

If you don’t immediately see your Personal Voice listed, try restarting your iPhone or toggling the Live Speech feature off and then back on. This should resolve any issues.

Now, whenever you want to use your Personal Voice, simply triple-click the side button on your iPhone, choose Live Speech, type the desired phrase, and hit Send on the keyboard. You will then hear your cloned voice speaking the typed phrase. This feature can be utilized during phone calls or FaceTime conversations, adding a personal touch to your interactions.

To make things even more convenient, you can save frequently used phrases in the Settings > Accessibility > Live Speech > Favorite Phrases section. This way, you won’t need to type them out repeatedly. Just tap on a saved phrase to have it played out loud.
