The G-Shock Mudman GW-9500: A Truly Reliable and Capable Watch

G-Shock Mudman GW-9500

I absolutely adore watches and the data they provide from my wrist. Usually, you’d find a smartwatch, like the Google Pixel Watch, Apple Watch Ultra, or Samsung Galaxy Watch, on one of my wrists. On the other wrist, I sport a Garmin, Coros, or some other watch with an impressive battery life. But recently, I’ve had the pleasure of adorning my non-smartwatch wrist with the Casio G-Shock Mudman GW-9500 — a watch that doesn’t require constant charging, boasts classic G-Shock looks, and thrives under any circumstance, all while reliably delivering useful data and guidance.

The new G-Shock Mudman GW-9500 comes in three color schemes: orange/black, green/black, and black with red highlights. Although priced at $380, the black model with red highlights is the one we got to test. Weighing in at 81 grams, the Mudman measures 56.7 x 52.7 x 14.8 mm. It may seem bulky, but that thickness is justified when you consider the dual-layer LCD it houses. With a 200-meter water-resistant rating, a mud- and dirt-resistant structure, and the classic G-Shock shock resistance, this watch is built to be tough.

But what truly sets the Mudman GW-9500 apart is its dual-layer LCD. This innovative feature enables the digital compass to overlay the text compass readings, making it quick and easy to determine the direction you are facing. The compass measures and displays your direction as one of 16 points on the compass with a graphical directional pointer, adding a touch of graphic delight to your navigation.

The sustainable bio-based resin case of the Mudman GW-9500 is equipped with six large buttons. The two on the left are used for adjusting settings and switching between watch modes, while the three on the right provide you with output from the triple sensors. Clearly labeled and easy to press, the compass, barometer, and altimeter buttons give you instant access to vital outdoor data.

Now, it did take me a bit longer than I care to admit to discover the sixth button. It’s cleverly positioned at the bottom of the bezel along the watch band and serves as the LED backlight trigger. Offering one- or three-second durations, the LED backlight effectively illuminates the entire watch face, ensuring easy readability even in low-light situations.

Make sure to flip the Mudman GW-9500 over and take a peek at the back. You’ll find the iconic Mudman mole character etched into the stainless steel, adding a delightful touch to the watch’s design. The band of the watch is also constructed of renewable organic resources and features enough openings to accommodate wrists of all sizes.

The mode button on the Mudman GW-9500 takes you through a variety of displays, including time and date information, sunrise and sunset times, altitude recall (minimum, maximum, ascent, descent), a stopwatch accurate to 1/100th of a second, a timer with 1-second intervals for up to 24 hours, five daily alarms, world time across 31 time zones, and radio control status. Additionally, the watch receives daily time calibration signals, ensuring its accuracy and reliability as a timepiece.

Not only does the G-Shock Mudman GW-9500 fit comfortably on my wrist, but it also looks fantastic. It’s truly refreshing to have a watch that provides essential watch functions while also delivering key data that proves invaluable during trail runs, hikes, and outdoor explorations. If you’re in search of a reliable and capable G-Shock watch, I wholeheartedly recommend the Mudman GW-9500.
