Traditionally, organizations in the public sector and regulated industries have faced challenges when it comes to regulatory compliance for certain workloads. AWS Dedicated Local Zones address these challenges by offering fully managed cloud infrastructures that operate exclusively within a customer-specified location or data center. The Singapore government, through its Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGG), recognized the potential of AWS Dedicated Local Zones and became the first global customer to sign up for this service. SNDGG is responsible for driving the public sector’s digital transformation and engineering capabilities. The Singapore government’s Chief Digital Technology Officer, Chan Cheow Hoe, expressed confidence in the partnership and highlighted the importance of meeting stringent data isolation and security requirements.

In June of this year, the Singapore government announced its initiative to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) applications more efficiently and securely within the public sector. The AI Government Cloud Cluster, hosted on Google Cloud, was created to provide dedicated cloud resources for AI development. This platform enables developers with varying coding skills and limited technical knowledge to build chatbots and search platforms using generative AI applications. The AI Government Cloud Cluster is accessible via the Government on Commercial Cloud (GCC) platform, which runs on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. The GCC is part of a five-year roadmap to transition the public sector’s on-premise IT systems to commercial cloud platforms.

AWS already provides cloud regions and local zones to meet latency and data sovereignty requirements. However, the Dedicated Local Zones offer an enhanced level of exclusivity, catering to a single customer or community. Customers can configure their own private zones within these local zones, ensuring adherence to local regulatory needs. AWS gives customers the ability to monitor and control access and operations within their dedicated zones, including access auditing and restrictions.

Matt Garman, AWS’ Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, acknowledged that public sector and regulated industry customers have expressed the need for dedicated infrastructure to meet compliance requirements. Many of these customers have traditionally managed their own infrastructure on-premises, sacrificing the performance, scalability, and resilience benefits of the cloud. AWS aims to provide these benefits while augmenting security and governance features within the dedicated zones. The service is operated by local AWS staff and offers options to apply security clearance or other criteria on personnel.

AWS currently has five local zones across the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Mumbai. The introduction of Dedicated Local Zones reinforces AWS’ commitment to providing tailored solutions to meet the specific needs of its customers.
