Apple Unveils Double Tap Feature for Apple Watch: Control at Your Fingertips

During Apple’s ‘Wonderlust’ event at the Apple Park campus, the tech giant took the audience by surprise with yet another innovative feature for the Apple Watch: Double Tap. Now, you can control your Apple Watch without even touching it.

The Double Tap feature allows users to control their Apple Watch simply by tapping their index finger and thumb together twice. This gesture works as the primary button in an application, enabling a range of convenient actions. From taking a photo with the camera, pausing and playing music on Apple Music, snoozing an alarm, to picking up or ending a phone call, the possibilities are endless. Even launching Smart Stack and scrolling through widgets becomes a breeze with Double Tap.

The process of Double Tap works through the unique signature of movements and changes in blood flow when the index finger and thumb perform the double tap. Using data from various sensors like the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor, the neural engine processes this information to seamlessly execute commands.

Apple’s commitment to enhancing user experience doesn’t stop there. The Double Tap feature will be available as a software update next month for both the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. These two smartwatches also come equipped with Apple’s new U2 ultra-wideband chip, offering precision finding and integration with the HomePod.

The Apple Watch Series 9 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch Ultra 2 begins at $799. Both models are available for pre-order starting today and are scheduled to launch on September 22nd.

This announcement is part of Apple’s annual September event, where the company unveils major updates to its devices and software. Last year, we witnessed the introduction of the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max, along with the new Apple Watch series and Apple AirPods Pro 2.

Earlier this year, at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple wowed attendees with the unveiling of iOS 17, which is set to release soon. Additionally, Apple’s upcoming mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, was also showcased and is expected to hit the market in early 2024. However, with a starting price of $3,499, acquiring the VR/AR headset might require some serious saving.
