Apple

The announcement of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 at Apple’s iPhone 15 event may have initially seemed underwhelming due to its limited upgrades and familiar design. However, upon closer inspection, we can understand why this is the case and why it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

First of all, it’s important to note that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is not targeted at current Apple Watch Ultra owners. The only significant reason to upgrade would be for the brighter screen, but the original Ultra’s screen is already impressive. Additionally, the new S9 chipset and the Double Tap gesture are cool features, but those who already own the Ultra have been living perfectly fine without them. In fact, the Ultra has received rave reviews, with a perfect 10/10 score, and its performance and abilities make it a product that can withstand the test of time.

Apple has achieved something remarkable with the Apple Watch Ultra. Despite its initially bulky appearance, its unique shape, high-quality materials, and extensive list of features come together to create a fantastic product. Once you wear it on your wrist, you’ll appreciate its cool look and long battery life, making it suitable for both everyday wear and exploration. Products like the Apple Watch Ultra don’t require massive annual upgrades or frequent replacements because they excel in their functionality and design.

If we look back at previous Apple Watch models, it becomes clear that the Ultra 2 is consistent with Apple’s incremental approach to updates. The Series 7 and Series 4 were the most significant overhauls in terms of hardware and design, while the models in-between followed a similar formula. There was no need for drastic changes in the Ultra’s specification or design just to align it with the Series 9’s updated technology. Apple understands that a hasty, drastic overhaul of a 10/10 product would only result in a messy disaster.

The Apple Watch Ultra has maintained its identity since the first series, and that’s why the lack of radical changes in the Ultra 2 is perfectly acceptable. Apple knows that when something is right from the beginning, there is no need for drastic alterations. As users, we should appreciate the consistency and reliability of the product.

I’m particularly pleased that Apple has not abandoned the Ultra series, as it shows the product’s success and appeal. However, I would have loved to see some new updates, such as a new case color or finish and an exclusive band for the Ultra 2. While the existing band colors are attractive, a specific “Urban” band for city use would have been a fun addition. These updates would have differentiated the Ultra 2 from its predecessor and enticed potential upgraders who may have been hesitant to take the plunge.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a highly compelling smartwatch, especially for those who didn’t buy the Ultra in 2022. If you’ve been holding out for something new, now is the time to get excited. However, if you’re still happy with the original Ultra, my advice would be to wait and see what Apple has planned for 2024 and 2025. It’s during these years that we should expect even more reasons to upgrade our superb, 10/10 smartwatches.
