9 Reasons Why People Are Excited About Apple Vision Pro

ZDNET interviewed potential buyers interested in acquiring the Vision Pro and here's why there is a significant level of curiosity surrounding Apple's spatial computer.

Apple Vision Pro 9 reasons why people are eager to pre-order the $3,500 headset

Who would pay $3,500 for a next-generation computer that you wear like a visor in front of your eyes?

Since Apple announced its release date and pre-order plans for the Vision Pro, I’ve been talking with lots of people in tech about the upcoming launch, and I’ve been surprised at how many are planning to pre-order the headset—or, are at least thinking about it.

For those who are ready to plunk down their money, I’ve been asking them why they are motivated to buy one and what they plan to do with the Vision Pro. Here are their responses, grouped into nine points:

1. Immersive experiences are what’s next

Kevin O’Donovan, who runs an agency that advises tech companies, believes that “immersive experiences” are a key part of our future. He doesn’t see the Vision Pro being the “answer” but believes it has its sweet spot. He’s pre-ordering it to try out such tech and make an informed decision.

2. Eye tracking could have a larger impact

Nelson Karrick, a network engineer, is excited to see how good the eye tracking is in the Vision Pro. He believes it could have a major impact, not just for the headset, but also for traditional computing. Looking at a screen could become a more natural way to interact and would be beneficial for people with disabilities. Nelson plans to order the Vision Pro as soon as it goes live on the Apple Store.

3. Spatial video and spatial photography

Ben Thomas, an IT executive and photography enthusiast, is excited about the improved quality of spatial video and photography that the Vision Pro promises. He’s been disappointed with previous products but trusts that Apple may have finally nailed it. Ben is particularly looking forward to virtual travel and capturing 3D memories of family members. He’s ready to pre-order the Vision Pro.

4. It’s a big moment for early adopters

Mark McChesney, an IT leader, is an early adopter who loves exploring cutting-edge technology. He’s intrigued by the Vision Pro and thinks it might end up being compelling. Michael Peters, a sales executive and advisor to AR/VR companies, has similar thoughts but remains cautious about the initial release. Despite some concerns, he still wants it.

5. Developers have been waiting to do in-depth 3D experiences

Todd Heberlein, a software developer and cybersecurity expert, has been waiting to create in-depth 3D experiences that go beyond the 1-2 minute recommendations Apple made at WWDC 2022. With the Vision Pro and the VisionOS platform, Todd can finally bring his ideas to life. He’s definitely pre-ordering one.

6. Tech experts want to have an opinion when people ask

Mark McChesney enjoys being the go-to person for tech advice among his friends. He values staying up to date with tech, news, culture, and society. With the Vision Pro, he sees the potential for new tools and ways to learn and be entertained. Apple is even marketing the Vision Pro as the “ultimate entertainment device.”

7. Productivity is still an X factor

Ben Thomas is curious about how the Vision Pro could be used for work and productivity. Apple has emphasized its potential as a computer replacement, but Thomas wants to see how well it will work in reality. Mark McChesney envisions using it for creative work, communication, and consumption. The hype makes it seem like an all-in-one experience, combining video watching with ancillary data about the content.

8. The potential for an “iPad effect” in business

Kevin O’Donovan wonders if the Vision Pro will have an “iPad” moment in enterprises and industries. If executives and senior managers try the Vision Pro and see its potential, it could lead to a surge in demand for spatial computing and immersive experiences.

9. This first Vision Pro could be a future collector’s item

Nelson Karrick sees the Vision Pro as a potential collectors’ item, regardless of its success. In his opinion, people will seek it out as a piece of future nostalgia.
