Apple invests millions of dollars daily in AI development

Apple, known for its innovative approach to marketing and product development, is now making significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). While other major players like Google and Microsoft have already released their AI tools, Apple has quietly been investing millions of dollars a day into AI development, playing the long game once again.

Just weeks after OpenAI introduced its generative AI tool, ChatGPT, both Google and Microsoft released their own AI chatbots, Bard and Bing, respectively. These AI chatbots quickly gained popularity and stirred up some controversy. Now, almost a year later, Apple is reportedly working on several AI models, aiming to compete with major companies like Amazon, Google, and Meta.

Apple has multiple teams dedicated to developing various AI models, including an image generation model, a multimodal model capable of handling both text and visual data, and a conversational AI unit led by John Giannandrea, the senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, who was initially brought on board to enhance Siri.

According to reports from The Information, Apple’s AI models could not only improve Siri’s capabilities but also be used as customer service chatbots for AppleCare. One of the flagship models, called “Ajax GPT,” is said to have over 200 billion parameters, making it more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 which powers the free version of ChatGPT.

Developing such large language models comes with its challenges and costs. Training these models requires expensive hardware, extensive data processing capabilities, and substantial storage. Additionally, the energy consumption of these systems can lead to high energy bills. Fine-tuning these machine learning models also demands time and expertise, translating into a costly endeavor for Apple.

Despite the significant investment, Apple has chosen to keep its generative AI efforts under wraps, refraining from making any official announcements or confirmations regarding its progress. This secretive approach aligns with the brand’s strategy of unveiling polished and fully-developed products when the time is right.

By investing heavily in AI development, Apple is ensuring that it remains competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape, where AI is increasingly becoming a key technology. As the company continues to refine its AI models, users can expect enhanced AI capabilities integrated into Siri, opening up new possibilities for automated tasks and improved customer service experiences.

While Apple may have joined the AI party a little later than its competitors, its dedication and substantial investment demonstrate the company’s commitment to delivering innovative and unique AI solutions. With its combination of cutting-edge technology, user-friendly interfaces, and trademark attention to detail, Apple is poised to make waves in the AI space once again.
