AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT vs Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti: A Clash of Mid-Range GPUs

AMD has finally unveiled its highly anticipated Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT desktop GPUs, expanding their RDNA 3 lineup. Positioned between AMD’s top-end RX 7900 XTX/RX 7900 XT and entry-level RX 7600, these new graphics cards promise to deliver the best 1440p gaming experience. But how do they compare to Nvidia’s offerings?

In this article, we will focus on comparing the RX 7700 XT with the highly controversial Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti. For a more detailed analysis, be sure to check out our comparison between the RX 7800 XT and the Nvidia RTX 4070.

Pricing and Availability

The Radeon RX 7700 XT was announced alongside the RX 7800 XT on August 25 and became available for purchase on September 6 from leading board partners such as ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, and more. Priced at $450, it is $50 more expensive than the 8GB Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti.

On the other hand, the RTX 4060 Ti was launched on May 24 with a starting price of $400. It is available from various board partners and also as a first-party Founders Edition. There is also a 16GB version of the RTX 4060 Ti, offering double the VRAM at a higher price range of $450 to $530.

Specs

Let’s take a closer look at how these two GPUs stack up against each other:

Specifications RX 7700 XT RTX 4060 Ti
VRAM 12GB 8GB
Memory Bus 192-bit 128-bit
Ray Tracing Yes Yes
Tensor Cores No Yes
Power Consumption Higher Lower

Apart from offering more VRAM and a wider memory bus, the RX 7700 XT also boasts a higher count of ray tracing accelerators. While the RTX 4060 Ti does have dedicated Tensor or AI cores for better deep learning tasks, it consumes considerably less power than the RX 7700 XT.

Performance

To truly understand how the new RX 7700 XT competes with the RTX 4060 Ti, we tested both GPUs across a range of games at 1080p and 1440p resolutions. We also ran 3DMark Port Royal and Time Spy synthetic benchmarks for a comprehensive comparison.

At the 1440p resolution, the RX 7700 XT consistently outperformed the RTX 4060 Ti in every game we tested, delivering higher average frame rates. The difference was especially significant in Forza Horizon 5, where the RX 7700 XT offered 140 fps compared to the 4060 Ti’s 120 fps.

When it comes to ray tracing, AMD has finally caught up to Nvidia. In Resident Evil 4 and Metro Exodus, the RX 7700 XT offered better average frame rates and performed on par with the RTX 4060 Ti in Cyberpunk 2077 and Returnal.

Even at the lower 1080p resolution, the RX 7700 XT remained superior to the RTX 4060 Ti in all the games we tested. The new AMD GPU’s performance with ray tracing continued to impress, mirroring its 1440p performance.

In 3DMark’s Port Royal ray tracing test, the RX 7700 XT achieved a significantly higher score than the 4060 Ti, showcasing AMD’s improvements in ray tracing performance. Similarly, in 3DMark Time Spy, the RX 7700 XT scored notably higher than the 4060 Ti.

Which One to Choose?

Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti has been somewhat of a disappointment even before its official launch. Its underwhelming performance and high price tag have deterred potential buyers. Although it performs marginally better in certain games, it falls short compared to its predecessor in titles like Hogwarts Legacy and The Last of Us Part One.

Fortunately, AMD’s new RX 7700 XT emerges as the clear winner, despite its higher price. It offers significantly better performance than the RTX 4060 Ti in both 1440p and 1080p resolutions, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of gamers. Furthermore, the RX 7700 XT demonstrates impressive ray tracing capabilities, matching or surpassing the RTX 4060 Ti.

During the launch event, AMD also provided a sneak peek at FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3), showcasing its capabilities in Forspoken gameplay. FSR 3 combined with native anti-aliasing, anti-lag, and AMD’s fluid motion frames substantially increased frame rates. It will be interesting to see how FSR 3 compares to Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5.

While the release date for FSR 3 is yet to be announced, it may coincide with the availability of the RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT GPUs. In contrast, Nvidia’s DLSS 3 feature is already available and supported on the RTX 4060 Ti.

In conclusion, the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT offers superior performance and ray tracing capabilities compared to the Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti, making it the preferred choice for gamers seeking a mid-range GPU with excellent value for their money.
