The AI Revolution in Music Distribution: From Garage Bands to Spotify

Music Streaming

Some time ago, during a particularly dark time in my life, I found solace in composing music that reflected my various moods. After composing 12 tracks, they sat there, waiting for something. Many musicians have similar experiences, creating music but never really getting it “out there”. In the past, sharing music meant live performances, self-published CDs, or getting signed by a record label – a high barrier of entry. But times have changed.

The Golden Age of Indy Music

Today, launching a new music album or EP doesn’t require catching the eye of a record label executive. With the rise of music streaming services, anyone can release an album and get it onto popular platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more. This has opened up a golden age for independent musicians, allowing them to bypass mainstream sound gatekeepers and reach a global audience. And I decided to take advantage of this using AI.

What AI Was and Wasn’t Used For

Before diving into my AI-assisted journey, it’s important to clarify the role AI played. While AI was not involved in composing, mixing, or mastering my music, it did play a significant role in other aspects, such as album cover art, music genre identification, promotional prose, artist bio, and website graphics.

The Quest for Perfect Mastering

Although AI mastering tools are available, I made the conscious decision not to use them. I wanted my music to be a reflection of my own skills and creativity, free from any implication that a machine had composed or mixed it. While some tracks could have been slightly improved with AI mastering, I ultimately chose to maintain the purity of my original compositions.

Album Covers and Image Creation

To create captivating album covers, I turned to AI for assistance. Using the Midjourney tool, I generated various cover options for my tracks. Although not all were satisfactory, I found four compelling covers, which later led me to adopt a waterfall release strategy. I decided to release four EPs, each with one of the Midjourney-generated covers, before finally combining all tracks into one LP album using another Midjourney image.

Identifying Musical Genres with AI

Knowing the genre of your music is crucial when submitting to distributors and streaming services. However, I had no expertise in this area. So, I turned to ChatGPT and provided a list of instruments used in my compositions. By leveraging the AI’s capabilities, I obtained genre recommendations that helped me classify my music and ensure it aligned with the expectations of playlist curators.

Crafting Music Descriptions with AI

Describing the unique sound and musical experience of an album is essential for attracting listeners. Again, I turned to ChatGPT for assistance. By providing the list of instruments, as well as the blend of electronica, worldbeat, and orchestral music in my compositions, I received AI-generated descriptions that captured the essence of my music.

Crafting a Musician Bio with AI

Promoting music also requires a compelling artist biography. Given that my existing bios were not suitable, I used ChatGPT to analyze three bios from Spotify artists. By identifying common characteristics that made them suitable for musicians and artists, I gained valuable insights. I then used ChatGPT to craft an artist bio tailored to my music, which can be found on my music website.

Website Creation and Graphics with AI

Creating a website for music promotion is essential. While AI-based website creation tools still have room for improvement, I opted to use WordPress with a customizable theme. However, AI played a significant role in content creation and image generation. ChatGPT helped me write engaging marketing content, while Midjourney and Photoshop’s Generative Fill allowed me to create captivating images for the website.

The AI-ification of Musician Dave

As a camera-shy individual, I lacked suitable images for my music career. However, AI came to the rescue. I used Midjourney to generate a captivating profile image that depicted the cool and stylized image required for a musician. Additionally, I employed FaceSwap and Photoshop to match my face with AI-generated images, resulting in compelling visuals for my music bio and website.

Distribution, Promotion, and More

Thanks to music distribution services, independent artists can now reach a global audience. For a nominal fee, these services upload tracks to major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. I chose CD Baby to distribute my EP, which quickly made my music available on over 150 platforms. To promote my music, I enlisted the help of Groover, connecting with playlist curators who featured my tracks.

Embracing AI in the Music Business

While I could have done everything without AI, the assistance of AI-generated analysis, descriptions, and visuals proved invaluable. As I embark on future releases, AI will continue to play a significant role in generating promotional content. With AI’s support, I have successfully navigated the complexities of the music industry, leveraging technology to achieve my goals.

As the revolution in music distribution continues, more independent artists can now share their creations with a global audience. This golden age of music empowers musicians to bypass traditional gatekeepers, allowing their talent to shine. So, if you’ve been dreaming of sharing your music with the world, take inspiration from my AI-assisted journey. Let the power of technology amplify your creativity and connect you with fans across the globe.
