11 Essential Tips Before Playing Starfield

Starfield: A Galactic Adventure

It’s finally here – Starfield, the highly anticipated space roleplaying game from Bethesda Game Studios, is out and already making waves in the gaming world. With its vast universe to explore, hundreds of missions to undertake, and over 1,000 planets to visit, Starfield promises an unforgettable gaming experience. As someone who has already spent over 40 hours in this captivating world, I want to share some tips that I wish I had known when I first started my own adventure.

Don’t be a Hoarder

At the beginning of the game, it can be tempting to pick up every item you come across, hoping to sell it or use it later. But trust me, it’s not worth it. In those first few hours, I found myself constantly over-encumbered, unable to fast-travel due to the weight of all the useless items I had collected. The truth is, those items won’t sell for much, and they certainly won’t help you afford the expensive spaceships you’ll want to purchase. So resist the urge to pick up everything in sight and focus on what truly matters.

Sharing the Load

If you simply can’t resist grabbing everything in sight, there’s a solution for you. Use your companion or your ship as a pack mule. Talk to your companion and ask them to carry the items you don’t need on your person. This way, you can avoid being over-encumbered and freely fast-travel. Additionally, your ship will have an inventory display unit where you can unload any resources you’ve collected. These resources will be available for crafting purposes wherever you are, saving you precious time and effort.

The Art of Selling

While exploring the various cities and colonies in Starfield, you’ll come across different merchants willing to buy your goods. Look for the yellow kiosks at spaceports. These Trade Authority kiosks will allow you to sell whatever you have without the need for a long walk. Keep in mind that equipment such as space suits and weapons sell for a good price, but the majority of your credits will come from completing missions. So make the most of every opportunity to earn those valuable credits.

Starfield has a multitude of menus to navigate, but one of the most important ones is the star map. This is where you plan out your next destination. Instead of going through multiple menus to select your mission’s planet, simply go to the mission list and click on the active one. You’ll find an option to set a course directly to the desired planet, saving you time and unnecessary hassle.

The Power of Persuasion

One of the first skills you can learn in Starfield is Persuasion. This skill gives you access to the “Persuade” dialog option, leading to a minigame where you try to convince the person you’re talking to do something they wouldn’t normally agree to. This ability can save you time, money, and effort when used correctly. As your Persuasion skill levels up or with the help of items, persuasion becomes even easier. So don’t underestimate the power of a silver tongue in this vast universe.

Becoming The Mantis

In one of the early missions of Starfield, you stumble upon a note left by space pirates, hinting at a secret treasure. This discovery leads you to Denobola I-B and the base for a legendary vigilante group – “The Mantis.” Picture Batman but in space. Completing this challenging mission will reward you with a powerful set of Mantis armor and the Mantis ship, capable of obliterating multiple enemy ships during space battles. Plus, with the Mantis ship, you’ll have an added bonus of repelling space pirates who might otherwise try to ambush you during your travels.

Crafting from the Cosmos

Crafting plays a vital role in Starfield, allowing you to create outposts, upgrade your gear, and develop healing items. While some resources can be obtained from merchants, many essential organic resources like fiber, sealant, and nutrients can only be found by hunting and killing alien life forms. Most creatures are relatively easy to defeat, but caution must be exercised as you may encounter more formidable and dangerous monsters.

Boosting Your Way

Unlocking and equipping the Boost Pack Training skill early in the game can prove to be immensely beneficial. With this skill, your pack gains thrusters that provide a small boost when activated while jumping. Boosting not only reduces fall damage but also allows you to reach higher platforms, gain an advantage over enemies, and traverse areas more quickly. It’s also an invaluable tool when attempting to escape from enemies.

Take Cover, Take Aim

It may not be immediately apparent, but Starfield does feature a cover system. When you find yourself behind a corner or crouched behind an object, aiming your gun will allow you to peek out for accurate shots. Watch how your character holds their gun, as it will change when you’re behind cover. Utilizing cover effectively during intense firefights will give you a significant advantage over enemies who are also adept at using cover.

Personalizing Your Arsenal

Starfield’s inventory UI may leave something to be desired, particularly when it comes to weapons. To overcome this, consider favoriting your most-used weapons. This will keep them readily available in quick slots, allowing for easy weapon swapping during combat. You can also add items like Med Packs to the quick slots for quick access to healing items. Streamlining your inventory management can significantly enhance your gameplay experience.

Auto-Hack and Auto-Persuade

After unlocking the Lockpicking and Persuasion skills, every successful use of these skills counts towards unlocking an auto-hack and auto-persuade option. When available, selecting these options will automatically fill a lockpicking slot or make a successful dialogue choice when using Persuasion, all without any additional cost or negative consequences.

Starfield is now available on PC and Xbox Series X and S consoles, starting at $70. If you’re a subscriber of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, you’re in luck – Starfield is also included in the subscription service. So brace yourselves, adventurers, and get ready to embark on an epic galactic journey unlike any other.
